Cybercrime research: not bad for a Pikachu

If you haven’t seen it, heads up that the Ponemon Institute (which as Diana can attest, I seem to be incapable of saying without switching it for “Pokemon Institute.”), recently put together with ArcSight a survey about the costs of cybercrime.
The paper itself is an interesting read, although heads-up that it requires you to register with ArcSight in order to view it. Anyway, the upshot of the thing is nothing new – but does put some data around what we already know: that crime is costly (average 3.8 million per year) and that it happens a lot (about 1 successful attack per week on average). Again, not going to knock your socks off from a news angle, but it’s nice to have some actual data and hard numbers to back up what we’ve known anecdotally.
Anyway, there are a few little nudnick tweaks that someone might gripe about (like why “viruses, worms, and Trojans” is a different category than “Malware”), but overall it could be a decent resource for someone looking to come up with a cost justification for investment in security.
